ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — If you owned the “average” home in Caldwell during 2020, you paid about $11,819 in property taxes, according to the latest round of state data.

Live in North Caldwell? The average homeowner paid $16,314. And in West Caldwell, the average homeowner paid $11,526.

  • Total Levy On Which Tax Rate Is Computed - $28,985,931
  • Total County Levy – 19.5%
  • Total School Levy - 51.8%
  • Total Municipal Tax Levy - 28.7%

NORTH CALDWELL

Here’s how much North Caldwell homeowners paid in 2020:

  • Average Residential Property Value – $687,137
  • Average Total Property Taxes - $16,314
  • Percentage Increase From 2019 –1.9%

Here’s how county, school and municipal taxes broke down in North Caldwell in 2020:

  • Total Levy On Which Tax Rate Is Computed - $38,924,236
  • Total County Levy –23.1%
  • Total School Levy - 59.5%
  • Total Municipal Tax Levy - 17.4%

WEST CALDWELL

Here’s how much West Caldwell homeowners paid in 2020:

  • Average Residential Property Value – $441,355
  • Average Total Property Taxes - $11,526
  • Percentage Increase From 2019 – 1.36%

Here’s how county, school and municipal taxes broke down in West Caldwell in 2020:

  • Total Levy On Which Tax Rate Is Computed - $59,595,314
  • Total County Levy – 20.6%
  • Total School Levy - 55.1%
  • Total Municipal Tax Levy - 24.2%

Statewide, New Jersey property taxes rose an average of 1 percent between 2019 and 2020, going from $8,953 to $9,112. The tax data tables also show that tax ratables rose 2 percent statewide since 2019, an increase above the five- and 10-year historical averages, with total ratables now at $1.118 trillion.
