NJSIAA- District 2 High School Fencing Championship
West Essex High School Fencing Team is victorious
Another stellar day for the West Essex Knights Fencer’s as the girls and boys teams took to the strips against 9 other High School teams from district 2. The District 2 HS Fencing Championship meet was held on Saturday Jan 18, at Passaic County Technical Institute in Wayne NJ.
The girls fared well in saber and foil but lagged in epee. Girls saber A strip Team Captain Audrey Baker swept her pools throughout the day, winning every bout, followed by B strip Sasha Craine who finished in 6th place, and rounded out by C strip Maria Kardash, earning their spot to fence at the States squads tournament, as well as the States individual championship.
Girls foil team was led by Evie Klein winning a 4th place, cementing her place to participate at the annual States Individuals championship. The boys teams, saber, foil and epee, produced similar results as epee A strip Team Captain Kevin Baker won all but one bout throughout the day giving him a first place finish and a gold medal in the boys epee event . Ethan Wiederhorn was a powerhouse to contend with as he placed a close 2nd behind Kevin Baker, receiving a silver medal for his Olympian efforts. For boys saber, Ahren Alberto fenced his way to 3rd place and an entry into the States individuals championships.
And for boys foil, coming in 1st place, for a gold medal, was the talented Robin Hu. Robin’s teammate Matthew Sun took a well-deserved 3rd place, for the boys foil bronze medal. By placing first, second and third in each category, the West Essex teams also qualified to participate at a tournament specifically created for each squad. All-in-all it was an amazing day for West Essex fencing, as they fought to victory in virtually all weapons.
