NORTH CALDWELL, NJ — North Caldwell Police Chief Mark Deuer offered a statement to the community on the anniversary of the borough’s first confirmed case of the coronavirus.

Deuer, who has advocated for COVID-19 vaccination, released the following statement on March 15:

“I would like to take a minute to thank the men and women of the North Caldwell Police Department. They have worked each and every day this past year without hesitation or question. They have responded to countless COVID-related illness calls, putting themselves at risk to give the very best care possible to the residents. Even when the virus made its way into our building and sickened members of this department, they all still put on the uniform and walked back out into the pandemic, fearless and determined.

“I would also like to thank the West Essex First Aid Squad, the North Caldwell Fire Department, the Board of Health, the County of Essex, and the mayor and town council. They say it takes an army, and during these times, if it weren't for the amazing team listed above, we could have never gotten this far.

“I also can say without hesitation, our success this year battling this virus is due to this amazing community. The residents of this town have gone above and beyond in their support of this department. The donations of PPE, the lunches and dinners, the homemade masks, the support of our sign sale, the cards and letters, and most importantly the residents who took the extra minute to say thank you to the officers when they saw them. We couldn't do it without you! No town comes together during difficult times like North Caldwell does.

“I believe we have turned the corner and are headed towards the finish line. But until then we all need to continue to work together and support one another.

“I hope you all stay healthy and safe.”
