Orton Rd. Bridge In W. Caldwell To Close For 6 Months: Officials

The Orton Road Bridge in West Caldwell will close for six months to complete a major replacement project, officials said.

CALDWELLS, NJ — The Orton Road Bridge in West Caldwell will close for six months to complete a major replacement project beginning “on or about March 4,” officials said.

According to a flyer from the Essex County Department of Public Works, driveways will remain open throughout construction. A pedestrian bridge will be installed for pedestrians/bicycles.

The “detour route” is Westville Avenue/Passaic Avenue/Glenwood Way/Midvale Avenue, officials stated. (Story continues below)

In the summer of 2018, the bridge was temporarily closed after a heavy storm that ravaged many spots in the Caldwells. When the bridge reopened last August, officials said the county was already in the planning stages of designing a new bridge to replace the existing one when the storm hit.

According to the Essex County Office of Purchasing website, a $2.16 million contract was awarded to Newark-based Reivax Contracting Corp. on Dec. 12, 2018 to carry out replacement of the Orton Road Bridge.
