CALDWELLS, NJ — Voters headed to the polls on Tuesday to pick Democratic and Republican candidates in New Jersey’s 28th District as part of the 2021 primary election, including the Caldwells.

Local races took place for town councils in Caldwell, North Caldwell and West Caldwell. Polls closed at 8 p.m. The winners will represent their parties in November’s general election.

In Caldwell, Francis X. Rodgers III and Christine Schmidt ran uncontested for the Democratic nomination. No candidates filed to run for the Republican nomination.

According to the Essex County Clerk’s Office, with seven out of seven districts reported, here are the unofficial results:

Democrat (vote for two)

  • Francis X. Rodgers III – 383 votes (50.13%)
  • Christine Schmidt – 381 votes (49.87%)

Republican

  • No candidates

NORTH CALDWELL

In North Caldwell, Francis X. Astorino and Robert C. Kessler Jr. ran uncontested for the Republican nomination. No candidates filed to run for the Democratic nomination.

With three out of four districts reported, here are the unofficial results:

Republican (vote for two)

  • Francis X. Astorino – 240 votes (51.61%)
  • Robert C. Kessler Jr. – 225 votes (48.39%)

Democrat

  • No candidates

WEST CALDWELL

In West Caldwell, Jessica Almeida and Christy Lazarow ran uncontested for the Democratic nomination. Michael Crudele and Stanley W. Hladik ran uncontested for the Republican nomination.

With nine out of nine districts reported, here are the unofficial results:

Democrat (vote for two)

  • Jessica Almeida – 510 votes (50.3%)
  • Christy Lazarow – 504 votes (49.7%)

Republican (vote for two)

  • Michael Crudele – 556 votes (50.14%)
  • Stanley W. Hladik – 553 votes (49.86%)
