Blowing Snow, Freezing Rain Hammers Chatham, Schools Close for Weather

Chatham schools are closed today as the township battles wet, freezing, and hazardous conditions Monday. Winter Storm Linus dropped nearly 8 inches on Morris County last night.
An additional inch of snow and sleet could fall on Chatham today, the NWS reports. The township will be hit with freezing rain, snow showers, and sleet that will turn into all snow after 2 p.m. The chance of snow showers will continue to affect the area until 9 p.m.
Chatham will combat blowing snow in the evening with temperatures plummeting to 7 degrees. It will be bitter cold tonight with wind chills falling to 8 below zero after midnight.

There will also be up to a tenth of an inch of ice on the ground, causing hazardous conditions on roads and side walks. Speed restrictions are in affect on the Garden State Parkway, the New Jersey Turnpike and other major highways as accidents and downed wires continue to plague travellers around the state. The National Weather Service issued a “Winter Storm Warning,” Sunday saying a “significant” storm could possibly dump up to three to nine inches of snow in New Jersey, and much rain, sleet and snow in South Jersey.

The winter storm warning will remain in affect through Monday afternoon at 1 p.m. There is the potential for one-tenth to one-quarter inch of ice, according to the National Weather Service.
