Chatham Borough Conducting Hydrant Flushing Next Month
Water may get discolored, but officials say it isn't harmful. Here's more information on the process.
CHATHAM, NJ — Chatham Borough will conduct hydrant flushing from April 5-30. Water may get discolored, but officials say it isn't harmful.
The Chatham Utilities Division flushes the water mains in the distribution system by opening hydrants each year. This is part of the borough's systems-maintenance program to aid water service.
"We flush our mains because it helps to clean out any buildup of mineral deposits and sediment inside the pipes," said a note from borough officials. "These harmless deposits can occur when water demands are reduced during winter months. As part of the process, flushing also allows us to use the hydrants to make sure they are operational."
