Chatham Borough Named 'Tree City USA' For The 17th Time
The Borough was given the honor by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commitment to staying green.
CHATHAM BOROUGH, NJ — Chatham Borough is all about the green-- trees, that is. The Borough has been recognized as "Tree City USA" by the Arbor Day Foundation for the 17th year in a row for its commitment to keeping the borough green.
Chatham Borough takes significant steps to keep the town leafy. They offer free trees to all residents once a year, have tree ordinances, and an annual forestry budget of $2 per capita.
"Tree City USA communities see the impact and urban forest has in a community first hand," the president of the Arbor Day Foundation Dan Lambe said. "Additionally, recognition brings residents together and creates a sense of community pride, whether it's through volunteer engagement or public education."

Making sure a town has enough trees can have plenty of benefits for its residents. Leafy areas tend to have higher property values, reduce energy costs and improve stormwater management, according to the foundation.
