Chatham Holding A Community Food Drive: How To Participate

A year after the Chatham United Methodist Church formed a food pantry, a community-wide initiative will take place.

CHATHAM, NJ — It's been more than a year since the Chatham United Methodist Church formed a community food pantry to alleviate hunger during the pandemic. Now the church will serve as a site for the Chatham Community Food Drive from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 15.

For the food drive, the church is collaborating with Chatham Hills Subacute Care Center and the Chatham, Chatham Township and Green Village Fire Departments. Drop-off locations include the church (460 Main St.) and Chaham Hills Subacute (451 Southern Blvd.).

Chatham United Methodist Church started a "pop-up pantry" in March 2020. It began with a few plastic shelves and a sign instructing "take what you need, leave what you can."

Both Chatham and Madison have helped keep the pantry well-stocked, and the church replaced the shelves with two weather-sturdy sheds that remain accessible at all hours behind the church. The sheds are adjacent to the preschool playground and the Chatham Middle School parking lot.
