Chatham Officials Warn Residents to Stay Safe On Icy Streets

As Chatham continues to battle icy conditions, the township is warning residents to stay clear of ice.

Chatham Township is reminding residents to stay clear of ice, as frigid temperatures continue to cause hazardous conditions on Chatham sidewalks and streets.

According to the CDC, falls are the number one cause of injuries to adults. Many of these falls happen when sidewalks, driveways, and walkways are covered in snow and ice, the Township stated.

“Make sure any of these surfaces around your home are shoveled regularly and free from debris,” the Township stated. “Keep in mind that simply clearing the snow may not be enough to keep the area safe; ice is always a concern during the winter.”

Residents should keep access routes to home clear and spread sand or rock salt on slippery spots, paying particular attention to stairs, since they can be hazardous and icy in colder months.

Seconds Count: Clear Snow Away Fire Hydrants

Fire Departments must be able to access the fire hydrant from the street and attach hoses all around the hydrant in order to effectively respond to an emergency, the Township reports.

The Township urges residents to work with neighbors and speak with plow drivers to ensure that the fire hydrant closest to home remains clear of snow.

“In the event of a fire, every second counts,” the Township stated. “Please help us by taking note of the hydrant closest to your home and speak to your neighbors and help keep them shoveled.”
