CHATHAM, NJ — Chatham Township is urging residents to stay off the roads after a major winter storm dumped nearly a foot of snow and knocked out power to thousands.

"Please continue to stay off the roads. There are several trees and wires across major roadways making travel extremely hazardous. Please stay away from all downed wires," the township said. " If you should see a downed wire please assume that they are live and stay clear of them. Report any unmarked downed wire to the Chatham Township Police."

Many residents in the township and borough are without power, although many saw it restored overnight. 1,995 homes in Chatham Borough and 2,252 homes in Chatham Township are dark as of 8:35 a.m. JCP&L has not provided any restoration times, but have begun work across the county to restore power.
