Hour-By-Hour: Arctic Winds Bring Snow, Biggest Chill In 11 Years to Chatham

Temperatures plummet with wind chills falling to 10 below. Here's how the storm will affect Chatham today and through the weekend.

Chatham residents will experience the worst cold in 11 years this weekend, as an “impactful storm” blows snow and strong wind gusts that could cause power outages across the state.

Temperatures will drop below zero around the state with wind chill values dropping to 10 below on Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday, Sunday and Monday morning. The National Weather Service has also issued a “Hazardous Weather Outlook,” predicting a harsh arctic outbreak for the holiday weekend.

Chatham will see about an inch of snow Thursday afternoon, with highs near 39 degrees and wind gusts as high as 26 miles-per-hour, according to the NWS. About half an inch of snow will accumulate during the day. Snow showers will continue to fall in Chatham Thursday night, with wind gusts rising to 32 miles-per-hour and new snow accumulation totaling less than half an inch..

  • 3 p.m.: 36 degrees, snow
  • 4 p.m.: 35 degrees, snow
  • 5 p.m.: 34 degrees, snow
  • 6 p.m.: 33 degrees, snow
  • 7 p.m.: 28 degrees, snow
  • 8 p.m.: 25 degrees, slight chance of snow
  • 9 p.m.: 23 degrees, wind chill at 7 degrees
  • 10 p.m.: 21 degrees, wind chill at 4 degrees
  • 11 p.m.: 20 degrees, wind chill at 3 degrees
  • 12 a.m. Friday: 19 degrees, wind chill at 2 degrees
  • 1 a.m.: 19 degrees, wind chill at 2 degrees
  • 2 a.m.: 17 degrees, wind chill at 1 below zero

The cold will set in on Friday with wind chill values plummeting to 10 below zero, with mostly cloudy skies during the day. Saturday will bring more snow to Chatham with snow showers during the day and new snow accumulation totaling around an inch.

The National Weather Service advises residents to ensure preparations are made to have sufficient fuel to heat homes and businesses, and to protect pipes from freezing.
