Library of the Chathams Offers a Free Online ASL Course

American Sign Language for Beginners

Thursdays, May 6, 13, 20 & 27 – 6 to 6:45 pm
A live sign language instructor will teach you how to sign basic phrases. You will learn new vocabulary at each session to increase your signing skills. Your virtual sign language course will include:

  • ASL Manual Alphabet
  • Greetings
  • Days of the Week
  • Foods and Snacks
  • ASL Negations and Affirmations
  • Basic ASL Sentence Structure – you will learn to bring together the signs you learned during the class.

This course is taught in four 45-minute classes on Thursdays, May 6, 13, 20 & 27. It includes class handouts and supporting videos of instructors signing the vocabulary you learn during class. Homework will be given and is essential to your success in this class. While the course is designed for adults, teenagers aged 15 and up may also sign up.
Class size is limited to 20 students. Registration is required – register only if you can attend all 4 classes. You can sign up by calling the library at 973-635-0603 or online right here. Registered students will receive the Zoom link before the first class.
