Longtime Chatham Reverend, Drew U. Scholarship Namesake Dies at 90

Robert Drew Simpson helped build churches in northern New Jersey and gave his time to Madison-based university.

To say Dr. Rev. Robert Drew Simpson made an impact in northern New Jersey would be a vast understatement.

The longtime Chatham United Methodist Church leader died late last week at the age of 90.

Simpson is the great, great-nephew of Daniel Drew, who founded Drew University for Methodist seminary education. Simpson graduated Drew University in 1945 and received his doctorate from the school.

According to a biography on the school’s website, Simpson followed the call to Christian ministry and led the Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church to constructing its own church building. Later, Simpson moved to Nutley, where he led another congregation to build its own church. In 1965 he settled into the lead reverend position at Chatham United Methodist Church, where he remained for 25 years.

In 1990 he was named Pastor Emeritus by the Chatham congregation upon his retirement.

In the time since, Simpson has had two scholarships created in his name at Drew Theological School and has held several positions on committees and boards at the university, including a trustee for 20 years.

Simpson and his wife, Megan, have authored a total of six books.

A memorial service will be held on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at Chatham United Methodist Church at 460 Main Street in Chatham.
