Madison Mariners Host Winter Storm at Rutgers University

Madison Mariners Host Inaugural Winter Storm Swim Meet

The Madison YMCA Mariners swim team hosted their inaugural Winter Storm Invitational at Rutgers University January 12 -13th. Thanks to 75+ Mariner volunteers including officials from multiple swim clubs, the meet was a huge success allowing 11 YMCA teams and over 1,000 swimmers to compete in Rutgers’ two pools. The Mariners’ hope is to sponsor this meet annually offering NJ YMCA swimmers a chance to compete in a world class facility and to serve as a qualifier meet for February and March’s Championship season.

Congratulations to Julia Jadro (8) who dropped over 3.7 seconds to set a new Mariners’ record for the 8&U 100 yd Back. Julia also swam 4 personal records during the Winter Storm meet.

The meet started Saturday afternoon with the 12&U Girls and Boys who continued to dominate the pool this winter. Ryan Sprague (12) led the group and earned 5 Top 10 finishes – 2nd in the 200 yd Breast, 7th in the 50 and 100 Free, 8th in the 200 IM and 9th in the 200 Back. Mary Gillen, Katelyn Hoffelder and Molly Newman all earned 3 Top 10 finishes as well. Mary (12) secured 2nd place in the 200 Fly, 3rd in the 50 Fly and 5th in the 100 Breast. Katelyn (12) crushed the Free events earning 2nd in the 200, 5th in the 100 and 6th in the 50 Free, setting PR’s in all. Molly (11), who set PR’s in 5 of her 6 events, earned 5th in the 200 Back, 7th in the 100 Back and 10th in the 200 Free.

Tirian Chang (10) was solid swimming 6 for 6 Top 10 finishes! He earned 1st in the 50 Fly, 3rd in the 100 & 200 IM, 5th in the 50 Fly and 100 Free and 7th in the 100 Back. Sean Clark (10) and Ransom Chang (12) each raced to 5 Top 10 finishes as well. Sean raced to two 1st place finishes in the 50 and 100 Back, 4th in the 200 Free, 5th in the 50 Fly and 8th in the 100 Fly. Ransom took 3rd in the 100 Breast, 5th in the 100 IM and 8th in the 50 Free, 100 Free and 50 Back. Anuthra Abeysinghe (11) and Owen Smith (11) both earned PRs in 5 events. Anuthra raced to an 8th place finish in the 50 and 100 Breast while Owen earned 7th in the 50 Breast and 6th in the 100 Breast. Owen also earned 9th place in the 100 IM.

Standout performances from the 13&Older swimmers included Atticus Chang’s 6 Top 10 finishes including 5 personal records. Atticus (14) pulled in three 3rd place finishes in the 50 and 200 Free as well as the 200 IM. He also received 5th and 6th place honors in the 100 Fly and Free as well as the 100 Back. Kyle Beebe (14) also racked up 5 Top 10 races in the 100 Breast and the 200 Yard Free, Back, Fly and IM.

Teammates Collin Faraher, Hannah Corcoran, Anya D’Costa, Sarah Daugherty and Kaley Snarr each had 3 Top 10 finishes. Collin (13) placed 4th and 6th, respectively, in the 100 and 200 IM as well as 5th in the 100 Back. Hannah (17) had a fantastic 1st place finish in the 100 Breast, as well as success in the 200 Breast and 100 IM. Anya (16) sprinted to 3rd place in the 50 Free, 5th in the 100 Back and 10th in the 200 Free. Sarah (17) endured the 200 Fly and earned an impressive 2nd place finish while posting 3rd in the 200 Breast and 100 Back. Finally, Kaley (16), a distance swimmer, achieved 4th in the 200 Free, 5th in the 100 free and 9th in the 200 IM.

Alison Barton, Cam Bresnahan, Lindsey Bresnahan, Katie Caviness, Casey Clark, Sadie Clarke, Kathleen Degnan, Maura Feron, Brendan Fowler, Emily Houng, Angela Irwin, Aiden Kagan, Evan Katz, Sasha Knoll, Elena Latorre, Gwen Lukasavage, Grace Mulligan, Phillip Puccio, Kiva Schraven, Charlotte Siow, Ryan Snarr, Owen Weller, Kiera Yarcheski and Elizabeth Yarcheski all earned at least one Top 10 Finish, many of who swam personal records in multiple events.
