More than 7,000 people are without power in Cherry Hill Wednesday night after two storms tore through the region.

CHERRY HILL, NJ — More than 7,000 people are without power in Cherry Hill Wednesday night after two storms tore through the region. A storm that has been classified as a derecho earlier Wednesday was followed by a storm that included both a tornado warning and a severe thunderstorm warning Wednesday night.

A total of 7,581 PSEG customers in Cherry Hill were without power as of 11:15 p.m., and power was not expected to be restored until midnight Saturday.

On Wednesday, there were several areas in Cherry Hill that had trees and wires down, police said. Anyone who must travel is advised to use extreme caution.

Brace Road was closed in both directions from Pearlcroft Road to the Connector. A tree was also down across the road in the area of Springdale Road and Greentree Road, the area of Bortons Mill Road and Kitty Hawk Road, Morris and Queen Anne Road and Route 561 and Walt Whitman.

"Cherry Hill firefighters and police officers are currently on multiple calls throughout the township," police said Wednesday evening. "Currently, the Walt Whitman / Hillside area has six of our officers standing post with multiple downed power lines and even more trees. With power out in so many locations we encourage proper social distancing while you are outside escaping the building heat inside your homes."

It is likely that trash collection will be delayed due to the downed trees and wires, township officials said Wednesday afternoon. PSEG and the Department of Public Works are working to address all the problem areas.
