Cherry Hill Recycling Hit Hard By Truck Driver Shortage

A shortage of qualified and trained drivers has had a negative impact on recycling in Cherry Hill, officials said on Thursday.

CHERRY HILL, NJ — The following areas in Cherry Hill may be experiencing delays in yard waste and trash collection due to the ongoing truck driver shortage that is impacting the country, township officials said Thursday morning:

Monday – Yard Waste
Barclay Farms

Tuesday –Trash
Kenilworth

Wednesday – Trash
Lakeview
Point of Woods
Ramsgate

The ongoing, regional shortage of truck drivers is causing repeated delays in Republic Services’ trash and recycling pick up across Cherry Hill, an issue that many towns in South Jersey are facing at the moment, township officials said.

“The township is well aware of the issue and working closely with Republic, its waste removal contractor, to keep residents updated on the situation,” township officials said. “We ask for your patience and understanding as Republic works to get everyone’s trash, recycling and yard waste picked up as soon as possible.”

It's an issue impacting recycling collection nationwide, as the shortage of recycling drivers is at its highest point in 15 years, according to the Solid Waste Association of North America.

The defection of truck drivers is due to an aging workforce, occupational hazards and increased demand from e-commerce, according to the association.
