Monaghan Named New Cherry Hill Police Chief

Retiring Chief Rick DelCampo will finish out the year at his post.

Just weeks after current Cherry Hill Police Chief Rick DelCampo announced his retirement, the township has named his successor, Mayor Chuck Cahn announced Monday morning.

Capt. William “Bud” Monaghan, who has headed the department's administrative division and managed police operations for the last several years, will take over effective Jan. 1 as the township's 10th police chief.

“We are excited about the future of our police department under Captain Monaghan’s leadership,” Cahn said. “Bud has the important combination of experience, knowledge and a high level of dedication that make him the ideal person for this job, and that have earned him respect and trust within the department. Township council and I look forward to working with him.”

Monaghan joined the Cherry Hill force in 1995 as a patrol officer and has climbed the ranks, joining the detective division before being promoted first to sergeant and lieutenant before becoming a captain in 2011.

He holds a degree in law and justice from Rowan University and a master's in human resources training and development from Seton Hall, and also graduated from the Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command.

“I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to lead the men and women of the Cherry Hill Police Department,” Monaghan said. “I look forward to continuing to run a strong and efficient department and know that public safety is a top concern to every resident of Cherry Hill.”

DelCampo will finish his three-and-a-half year tenure as chief on Dec. 31. He spent a total of 36 years on the force at various levels of leadership.

“It has been my privilege to work with and alongside Chief DelCampo,” Cahn said. “I want to thank him for his dedication to public service and his steadfast leadership.”
