6 New Coronavirus Deaths Discovered In Collingswood

COLLINGSWOOD, NJ — Six Collingswood residents were among 58 new coronavirus-related deaths announced in Camden County on Monday.

The new deaths are part of a backlog of previously unreported deaths that were discovered while the Camden County Department of Health was attempting to align the number of deaths reported by county officials with those reported by the state.

The backlog dates to April 13, according to county officials. As a result of these findings, the Camden County Department of Health said it is taking steps to update its procedures to help prevent additional backlogs in the future.

“We are deeply saddened to have learned of this devastating loss of life in our community. While these deaths date back to the middle of April, they continue to underscore the deadly potential of this virus and why we cannot allow it to regain a foothold in our region,” Camden County Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli Jr. said. “Around the country there are growing concerns regarding rising case totals and the beginning of a new wave of viral spread. The truth is that until we have a reliable treatment or an effective vaccine, we will likely continue to see increases and decreases in viral activity to varying degrees. The only way to truly protect yourself and others is to continue social distancing, wear a mask in public, stay home when you are sick, and practice good hand hygiene. We are still at war with this virus, but we can win if we continue to fight with the weapons at our disposal.”

A Collingswood woman in her 40s and a Collingswood man in his 60s were among the 109 new cases of the coronavirus that were also reported in Camden County on Monday. Trace investigations are underway in all new cases.

There are now 110 cases of the coronavirus in Collingswood with 10 confirmed deaths. In Camden County, there are now 7,389 coronavirus cases with 410 confirmed deaths.

Cappelli will be joined by Rep. Donald Norcross (D-1) and Camden County Police Chief Joe Wysocki for an update on the county’s response to the coronavirus at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

“This pandemic represents a rapidly changing situation, so we are continuing to maintain an open dialogue with our residents to keep them armed with up-to-date guidance and critical resources,” Cappelli said. “Our goal is the same as it has been since March, and that is to keep our community safe, to keep our residents healthy, to stop the spread of coronavirus, and ultimately to save lives.”

The Camden County Department of Health also announced that 1,269 residents of the county’s 56 long-term care facilities have tested positive for the coronavirus, and that 282 residents have died. A total of 463 staff members have tested positive for the coronavirus with three confirmed deaths.

The following information is known about the new deaths that were reported in Collingswood:

• Two men in their 90s;
• Three women in their 90s; and
• A woman in her 100s.
