Collingswood Business Owner Arrested In Shovel Attack: Police

Brian McBride was arrested one day after police said he attacked an employee of a neighboring business with a shovel.

COLLINGSWOOD, NJ — A Collingswood business owner was arrested on Tuesday after assaulting a neighboring business’s employee with a shovel, according to authorities.

Collingswood police arrived at the scene on the 500 block of Haddon Avenue on Monday to find a man on the ground suffering from a wound to the head, according to Acting Camden County Prosecutor Jill S. Mayer and Collingswood Police Chief Kevin Carey.

A witness told police he saw 42-year-old Brian McBride swing and hit the victim in the head with a shovel, causing the victim to fall to the ground, according to authorities. Through the investigation, detectives discovered surveillance footage that shows the victim stumbling to the ground after being attacked.

McBride’s wife owns Cup of Bliss Coffee. The victim was a chef at Macona BBQ according to NJ Pen. The assault followed an argument between the two, and the victim was hospitalized with a concussion.

McBride contends he was acting in self-defense, and that he and his wife have been subjected to several threats and harassment, the Courier Post reports. He said this incident was the latest in those threats.

McBride was arrested on Tuesday and charged with one count of third-degree aggravated assault, one count of third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and one count of fourth-degree unlawful possession of a weapon.

He was released on Wednesday and is awaiting a Centralized First Appearance.
