Cranford Reports New Coronavirus Death

The newest statistics were released Monday.

CRANFORD, NJ — The township of Cranford said Monday that another resident has passed away from coronavirus since the end of January, bringing the death toll since the beginning of the pandemic to 105.

The person was "in the community" as opposed to in a long-term care home, the township reported.

Before that, the last fatality of a Cranford resident due to the virus was reported on Jan. 22.

There were 16 new cases reported by Monday since the township's last report on Friday, bringing the total in town since the beginning of the pandemic to 1,160.

The total population of Cranford is 24,000.

Statewide, cases increased in January after holiday gatherings, but have begun to come down. However, they are still high, with hospitals treating 2,872 covid patients as of a week ago. Gov. Phil Murphy said that during the nor'easter last Monday, 254 patients were released from hospitals after battling the virus, and 297 were admitted with it.

The total death toll from the virus in New Jersey is now more than 19,500.

As of Monday, 464,000 Americans had died of coronavirus.
