CRANFORD, NJ — Cranford Superintendent of Schools Scott Rubin sent out an email on Thursday saying that after going remote for two weeks after Thanksgiving, the district schools will reopen for hybrid instruction on Monday.

But Rubin also sent email on Friday saying that "an individual who splits time between BAS and HAS and an individual at CHS [Cranford High School] tested positive for COVID-19." Because the district has been remote, "based on the timing of the cases, the Township Health Department has confirmed there are no close contacts in any of these schools," he wrote.

The district has reported a slew of cases over the remote period.

In the Thursday email, Rubin explained, "The decision to return was based on a review of the most current data and circumstances and guided by the Township Health Department. We will continue to actively monitor State and regional health information and work in partnership with the Township Health Department. Please be advised that to date, contact tracing indicates there have been no cases of COVID-19 transmitted in Cranford Public Schools; transmission has happened outside the school environment."

Meanwhile, the district may have another challenge to contend with this week: Snow.

Snow days and the forecast for Cranford

Some North Jersey districts announced their plans for inclement weather over the weekend. While some, like Hoboken, will try to go remote if the weather is bad, others, like nearby Millburn, will start by giving the traditional days off.

Forecasters on Sunday announced a winter storm watch for 12 of the state's 21 counties, with rain and snow mixed on Monday and then a severe storm Wednesday — but what about for Cranford specifically?

Accweather predicts a few inches initially on Wednesday afternoon, and then a total accumulation of 6 to 10 inches from Wednesday night into early Thursday (scroll down on the page for the total accumulation).
