Victim Identified In Fatal Cranford Car Accident Tuesday

The pedestrian was a Cranford resident, police said.

CRANFORD, NJ — A Cranford pedestrian who was fatally struck by a car Tuesday morning has been identified.

Police say Kenneth Ballman, 78, of Cranford, was struck at 6:33 a.m. Tuesday while crossing the street. They had temporarily withheld his identity pending notification of next of kin.

The Police Department said that a 51-year-old Kenilworth man was driving a 2006 Hyundai Sonata southbound on Springfield Avenue, approaching Orange Avenue Tuesday morning.

Ballman was apparently crossing Springfield Avenue, just south of the intersection, and was struck in the roadway. He was transported to an area hospital with significant injuries. He passed away at the hospital a short time later, police said.

The operator of the Hyundai stayed on scene and cooperated with law enforcement officials, police said.

The Cranford Police Department and Union County Police Department Traffic Unit investigated. No charges have been filed at this time.
