EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — In the lead-up to the Fourth of July, East Brunswick Daisy Troop #81267 created beautiful artwork for U.S. servicemen and women stationed abroad with their "Art with Heart" project.

Last Friday, May 31, after receiving permission from Rev. Thomas J. Walsh (Father Tom) at St. Bartholomew's Church, Troop #81267 embarked on a field trip to visit the church's prayer garden. Their walk through the prayer garden was spiritual, but not religious in nature.

The Daisies took turns reading aloud Shel Silverstein's classic "The Giving Tree" and shared their thoughts on how the tree sacrifices all for the little boy. The young ladies realized that U.S. soldiers also sacrifice all. Julia Davey, a junior with East Brunswick Girl Scout troop #82460, told the girls that by far, her grandfather's favorite experience as a Marine was receiving letters from home. From there, the girls began their artistic journey.

The scenic and spiritual prayer garden sparked the imagination of the young artists as they sketched for our soldiers. They drew butterflies, trees, birds and hearts. Some young ladies wrote messages such as "You are always in our hearts" and one Scout simply printed "Thank you" on the wing of a cardinal. The troop held up their artwork for a "gallery walk" and offered positive feedback to each other.

The Daisy troop will be mailing all their art work to U.S. soldiers abroad, with the hopes of it reaching the soldiers by July 4. Troop co-leader Marie Lipsitz is donating all the stamps for the project so that "Art with Heart" can brighten a soldier's day.
