East Brunswick Gym Promotes Community Health And 'Relationships'

Community Fitness Barbending is ensuring all members remain healthy during the pandemic, by conducting safe and functional workouts.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — During the beginning of the pandemic, the future for the fitness industry looked bleak. As gyms across the state shut down, many were fighting for survival. But Community Fitness Barbending (CFBB) tapped into its existing relationships to stay afloat and foster a community of sharing and togetherness.

Several nominations came in for this East Brunswick fitness studio, for Business of the Year 2020. According to customers, CFBB went above and beyond during the pandemic to take care of members' physical and mental health.

“The best gym in town - always so flexible, encouraging, and (they) worked so hard during COVID to ensure everyone had access to safe and functional workouts,” said customer Jolie Harmon.

Jim and Nicole Kupko are the husband-and-wife team behind the gym. During the shutdown, they went virtual for the customers.

“Ours is a brick and mortal facility. But we set appointment times, so our customers could come in and rent equipment, to join our virtual fitness classes,” said Nicole.

The gym rented equipment worth $30,000 for free.

A few months later they applied for a permit to use the parking lot and conduct fitness classes outdoors. When Gov. Phil Murphy announced that gyms could reopen indoors on Sep. 1, CFBB took an extra month to get back inside the studio.

For a whole month, Jim and Nicole worked at rearranging all equipment, and putting safety measures in place. They finally reopened on Oct. 1.

“We've dedicated half an hour between each class for cleaning. Athletes coming in get their temperatures checked and answer a list of questions. They are also encouraged to clean up after themselves,” said Nicole.

Around five years ago, Nicole gave up a lucrative corporate job to join her husband at the fitness studio. Jim is 20-year veteran of the Newark fire department, serving as Battalion Chief.

“I enjoy every moment. Our community is like a second family. People have fostered relationships through the studio,” said Nicole.

This studio in East Brunswick is responsible for a few weddings, new jobs and more.

Their customers are also all-praise for Jim and Nicole’s contribution to local hospitals and medical staff.

“Very early on they donated protective gear and food to local hospitals and their nursing and medical staff,” said Jen Gosso, a customer.

“Tough times did not slow their community service efforts and they continued to raise money and collect donations for various causes throughout the pandemic,” she said.

"There is an incredible energy at CFBB. I’m thankful to be a part of it,” said Cindy Marchese.

The fitness studio is located at 3 Joanna CT, STE E, East Brunswick.
