East Brunswick Launches Initiative For Home, Auto Safety

Mayor Brad Cohen and police officers will visit residents to inform them of ways to keep homes and vehicles safe during the holidays.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ —The East Brunswick Police Department and Mayor Brad Cohen will be participating in a program to raise awareness on home and auto security.

The program, ‘Boots on the Ground’, was created by the East Brunswick Community Response Unit. It involves officers and the Mayor walking door-to-door informing residents on ways to keep their homes and vehicles safe.

An increase in residential burglaries and vehicle theft occur during the holidays, said the police department. Through this program, law enforcement will remind East Brunswick residents to be aware of their surroundings and to help in keeping the community safe.

Here are a few suggestions to keep the community safe:

  • Introduce yourself to your neighbors and learn what vehicle they drive.
  • Be vigilant and report anything suspicious.
  • Do not store valuables in your vehicle. Public parking lots are vulnerable as thieves often keep a watch. Storing valuables in the trunk is ineffective.
  • Always lock home doors and windows. Burglars look for a home that appears unoccupied.
  • Make sure the alarm system is armed every time you leave home.
  • Glass sliding doors are especially vulnerable, make sure they are secure.
  • Secure back yard fences.
  • Install motion lights and surveillance system.
  • Don’t discuss the valuable you’ve stored at home with anyone including coworkers or friends.
  • If you have a safe at home, make sure it’s properly mounted and follow manufacturer's instructions.
