East Brunswick Police Promote Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month
May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and the East Brunswick Police is urging motorcyclists to keep safety in mind while on the road.
EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — As the weather gets warmer, motorcyclists come out on New Jersey roads more frequently.
But unfortunately, more crashes and accidents are reported between other vehicles and motorbikes.
May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and the East Brunswick Police Department is urging motorcyclists to keep safety in mind while on the road.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motorcyclists are about 29 times more likely than passenger vehicle occupants to die in a motor vehicle crash and are 4 times more likely to be injured.
Motorcyclists need to make sure they have the proper license before hitting the road.

The police department has shared a few tips for motorists and motorcyclists offered by the NHTSA.
Here are some tips:
- Check your motorcycle’s tire pressure and tread depth, hand and foot brakes, headlights and signal indicators, and fluid levels before you ride.
- Take the time to get accustomed to the feel of a new or unfamiliar motorcycle by riding it in a controlled area.
- Make sure you know how to handle your motorcycle in different conditions.
- Arms and legs should be completely covered when riding a motorcycle, ideally by wearing leather or heavy denim.
- Boots or shoes should cover your ankles, while gloves allow for a better grip and help protect hands in the event of a crash.
- Know local traffic laws, and obey them.
