East Brunswick Rt. 18 Box Truck Fire Creates Smoke Seen For Miles

A box truck caught fire at 1 p.m. Monday on Rt. 18 in East Brunswick, causing smoke that could be seen for miles.

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — That smoke that could be seen for miles around Monday afternoon in East Brunswick?

It was coming from a box truck that caught on fire on Rt. 18, say East Brunswick police.

The circumstances surrounding the fire are part of a criminal investigation, so police said they could not release any further details on the truck's driver.

However, the truck caught fire at 12:58 p.m. at 252 Rt. 18, near Old Bridge Turnpike.

Police, along with East Brunswick Fire Department #2 and Middlesex County HazMat, responded. The fire was so big that it damaged some overhead power lines, which eventually came down onto Rt. 18.

Old Bridge Turnpike, plus two lanes of Highway 18 northbound near Edgeboro Road, were closed at midday Monday in East Brunswick so the fire could be put out.
