Anti-Bullying Efforts Award Winning for East Hanover
New Jersey School Boards Association recognizes district with School Leader Award.

The East Hanover School District has been recognized by the New Jersey School Boards Association for its exceptional anti-bullying efforts by receiving this year's School Leader Award.
The district is one of three in New Jersey that was recognized for its progams and initiatives that have made their schools more of a positive atmosphere.
"We're very honored," Superintendent Dr. Joseph Ricca said. "I think it really says a lot about our community. East Hanover has come together 100 percent in support of our kids, and it's great that the New Jersey School Boards Association has recognized that."

One of the main things the district has been noticed for is the crime stoppers program that was implemented last year.
Through this progam, the district partnered up with the Morris County Sheriff’s Crime Stoppers to use their technology for reporting bullying incidents anonymously.

By using crime stoppers, the community has been able to report tips of suspected harassment, intimidation and bullying incidents. The reports are completely anonymous and get sent to both the superintendent and anti-bullying coordinator.
Ricca said it is partnerships like this with the community that have helped make the district so successful.
"It is through the consistent community support, both from community leaders and parents and guardians, that have allowed these programs to flourish in support of the children of East Hanover Township."
Ricca said that people from all over the community, including the police chief, Mayor Joseph Pannullo and local businesses have all come together to work towards a common goal; to help kids learn in a healthy environment.
"From day one they've been with us and they have supported the board and our schools every step of the way," Ricca said.
Two incidents were reported last year through the crime stopper technology, and 45 other bullying incidents were reported in other ways. Nine of those incidents were identified to be HIB—an anti-bullying law enacted in the state last year.
The district also has a character education program within the academic program, where teachers incorporate lessons relating to honesty, respect, responsibility, and other positive character traits.
The East Hanover district was also not only noticed within the state, but across the globe in Japan.
Japan's news team NHK Broadcasting chose East Hanover to film at its schools to learn from its anti-bullying initiatives.
Two weeks ago, the news team sat in the classrooms and filmed at the schools to see the different character education programs. The team also spoke with the teachers, faculty, students, and parents for their broadcast.
The district is going to be recognized and receive a plaque at the Annual New Jersey School Boards Convention on Oct. 23. The upcoming issue of School Leader Magazine will also recognize the district for its outstanding award.
Ricca said it is an honor for both the district and community to be singled out for this award.
"It's a community effort, and no one person is behind any success," he said. I think the East Hanover Board of Education has just been a tremendous force for trying to do good for kids, and this community really deserves a recognition."
