Man Tried to Use Fake ID to Open Store Credit Card, Police Say

Brooklyn resident was charged with identity theft and attempted theft.

A New York man was arrested after using a fake ID to open a Best Buy credit card through TD Bank, East Hanover Police said.

Denville Police notified the East Hanover department that a white male in his 30s with short hair was trying to make a fraudulent purchase at the Best Buy on Route 10, according to a police report. Denville Police said the man was driving a silver or beige Ford Explorer with New York license plates, the report stated.

Officer Ronald Farrington located the vehicle as the driver was trying to pull out of a parking space outside Best Buy.

Farrington found three men in the car and as other officers questioned each of them, they gave different stories as to what they were doing, police said.

The occupants were identified as Brian C. Summler, of New York, N.Y., William F. Payne Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y, and Jurdon L. Hill of Saint Albans, N.Y.

Farrington said the investigation and interviews with Best Buy employees revealed Payne entered the store and tried to open a Best Buy credit account through TD Bank using a false New York driver's license that said his name was Daniel Rosenbaum.

When the application was not approved, Payne tried to buy two iPads using a fraudulent American Express Gift Card, police said. The card was missing the ID number needed to make the purchase, Farrington said in his report. After Payne got the card back, he left the store.

Police obtained permission from Hill to search the car and found a TD Bank debit/credit application signed by Daniel Rosenbaum.

The other two men were released at the scene. Payne was arrested for the identity theft and criminal attempt of theft by deception. When he was searched police found a hypodermic needle in his possession, police said.

After Payne was transported to headquarters, police searched the vehicle he had been transported in. Stuffed in the cushions they found  the driver's fake New York license, a Visa card with the name Daniel Rosenbaum and an American Express Gift Card, police said.

Payne was turned over to Morris County Jail. Bail was set at $30,000.
