Mom With Infant Was on Drugs, Stole From CVS, Cops Say

A 32-year-old Roseland woman was arrested in the CVS parking lot Sunday night after she was caught shoplifting, under the influence of drugs and driving her infant around in the front seat, police said.

Sonya Jones was charged with DWI, failure to properly secure a child in a car seat and shoplifting.

According to the Florham Park Police, Jones was caught stealing baby formula and a bottle from the CVS on Columbia Turnpike at about 9:15 p.m. Sunday.

When Officer Geoffrey Rothrock arrived, Jones was in her car in the parking lot, police said. Rothrock noticed Jones had an infant in the front seat of her car in a baby seat loosely belted in, police said. Jones also showed signs of being intoxicated due to having glassy eyes with drooping lids and pinpointed pupils, and speaking inchorently, police said.

After Rothrock conducted sobriety tests, he determinned Jones was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.

Jones was arrested and transported to police headquarters where she was given a breath test and drug recognition expert test, which indicated she was under the influence of an intoxicating drug, and was unable to operate a motor vehicle safely, police said.

A urine sample was taken from Jones and sent to a lab to determine the drug that had been taken, police said.

Jones was released pending a future court date, police said.

Police also notified DYFS of the incident because of the involvement of a child, police said.
