Possible River Road Burglary Under Investigation

Homeowner noticed back door open and lock punched but no items missing, cops say.

Police are investigating a possible burglary at a River Road residence over Labor Day weekend, said.

Officers responded to the residence around 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 2 when the homeowner reported that he noticed his back patio slider door open and the lock punched, police said.

While the homeowner said he didn't notice any of his items missing, he told officers the previous tenants of the place were evicted only two days before the burglarly and still had many of their items in his home, police said.

When cops checked the house they saw most of the rooms empty except for a few pieces of furniture and garbage on the floor, police said.

Besides the forced entry signs, the only thing suspicious the current homeowner found were three water bottles on the kitchen counter that he claims were not there before, police said.

The homeowner also told cops he noticed the front door unlocked from the inside of the house, which could have possibly been used to exit, police said.

The previous tenants, who had been living in the River Road residence for two years, were evicted on Aug. 31 by the Morris County Sheriff's Office after not making rent payments since May, police said.

The water bottles found by the current resident were placed into evidence for the ongoing investigation, police said.
