Florham Park OKs Hiring 3 School Officers; East Hanover Results

Voters in Florham Park approved a measure to hire three Class III special law enforcement officers for the schools.

EAST HANOVER, NJ — Residents in East Hanover and Florham Park elected local representatives today, including town and borough council members, and local and regional school board representatives.

East Hanover

Carolyn Jandoli ran unopposed for town council as a Democrat, and will win with 2,641 votes.

The Hanover Park Regional School District has one candidate running for one open seat: Michael Lomio will win with 2,386 votes.

The local school board election is contested. Four people ran for two seats. The unofficial vote results, with the projected winners in bold, are:

Florham Park

Both the local and the regional school board races were uncontested. Charles "Skip" Shanley and Linda Rozek will be elected to two open seats on the local school board. Rhett Eveland and Ernest Eveland will be elected to the Hanover Park Regional Board of Education.

Democrats Peter Nicolas and Scott Orlovsky lost against Republicans Scott Carptener and Carmen Cefolo-Pane in the race for Borough Council. The unofficial vote results, with projected winners in bold, are:

  • DEM - Peter G. Nicolas 1,846
  • DEM - Scott T. Orlovsky 1,759
  • REP - Scott Carpenter 2,397
  • REP - Carmen Cefolo Pane 2,421

Voters came out in favor of hiring three Class III special law enforcement officers to work in Florham Park Schools. Unofficial vote results show 1,966 "yes" votes and 1,645 "no" votes.

Local Question #1

The Florham Park Board of Education proposes raising an additional $120,000 in the tax levy for the exclusive use to enhance the Florham Park Board of Education's school district security program. The additional levy will provide funds exclusively for the establishment and payment of a shared service agreement between the Florham Park Board of Education and the Borough of Florham Park to hire three (3) Class III Special Law Enforcement Officers in accordance with N.J.S.A. 40A:14-146.10-.16. Approval of these additional funds will result in a permanent increase in the Borough's tax levy. These proposed additional expenditures are in addition to those necessary to achieve a thorough and efficient education set forth pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:7F-39.

Interpretitive Statement

Class III Special Law Enforcement Officers ("SLEO III") are retired law enforcement officers under age 65, who are authorized by statute, N.J.S.A. 40A:14-146. I0-.16, to provide armed security for public and nonpublic schools when schools are in session or when occupied by students or their teachers. The Florham Park Board of Education proposes that three (3) retired officers will be hired to serve as law enforcement officer at each of the schools located in the Borough of Florham Park and will work under the auspices of the Borough of Florham Park Chief of Police. The taxes, if raised, will be used exclusively for this purpose. These proposed additional expenditures are in addition to those necessary to achieve a thorough and efficient education set forth pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:7F-39.
