East Windsor Offers Free Gun Locks Throughout March

Free gun locks will be available for any East Windsor resident beginning Thursday, and running throughout the whole month.

EAST WINDSOR TOWNSHIP, NJ — In the wake of the most recent school shooting in which 17 people were killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, at least one New Jersey municipality is taking steps to limit the possibility of gun violence.

East Windsor Township is distributing gun locks to any East Windsor resident for free through its Gun Safety Program, officials announced on Monday. The program will run throughout all of March, beginning Thursday, March 1.

“This is a pro-active initiative, geared to promote and provide improved gun safety,” East Windsor Mayor Janice S. Mironov said. “These locks if properly used by lawful gun owners can help prevent accidental deaths or injuries in the home, as well as deaths and injuries caused by the intentional misuse of guns.

“The use of gun locks is a no-brainer, which keeps guns out of the hands of children and helps prevent unnecessary tragedies. We hope that programs such as this will remind and educate lawful gun owners about their important responsibility to handle firearms safely and to store them in a secure manner.”

The township receives the gun locks for free through Project ChildSafe. Project ChildSafe is the nation’s largest firearms safety program, and is sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.
