DeTorres: At DeTorres and DeGeorge, we pride on the fact that we get things done! We settle almost 99 percent of our divorce cases. The average divorce takes about two years, and we do it in half that time — and most of the time for less money than most firms.
Patch: Tell us about the DeTorres & DeGeorge practice areas.
DeTorres: Our practice areas include divorce, premarital agreements, estate planning, adoption, separation, custody, parenting time, child support, spousal support, distribution of assets and debts, distribution of business and stock or stock options, post-judgement modifications and domestic violence.
Patch: How does DeTorres & DeGeorge measure success?
DeTorres: I think there are a lot of ways to measure success, but in our industry and with it being so personal and — quite frankly — difficult, I think our measure of success would be the success of our clients.
Some of our cases are very emotional, and for these individuals to be taking these courageous steps towards a better life is truly inspiring. Much after their cases are over and seeing how much they have grown and seeing how much life has changed for them in a positive way and that we were able to bring them towards those positive movements in their life is what would measure success for us.
Patch: What are the benefits of hiring a divorce attorney?
DeTorres: There are many benefits to hiring a divorce attorney. First and foremost, I think providing objective advice during an extremely emotional time is crucial. An attorney can keep a clear level head during this emotional time for you as sometimes people’s emotions can defer them from making wise decisions about the future. We are separating them from the emotions in order to make the best resolutions for everyone.
In addition, we can — at the very least — introduce you to professionals who can help you channel you emotions into positive strategies. With the emotions aside, divorce attorneys can suggest options that you may never knew even existed. Your lawyer will be able to advise you based on their experience and the nature of your situation the options to settle or go to court, and staying out of court and settling can not only make the process quicker and less painful but also, in most cases, much less expensive. There are cases, though, that do need to go to court if they cannot agree to a settlement, and to have an experienced attorney on your side is beneficial.
Patch: What advice do you offer to spouses seeking to initiate the divorce process?
DeTorres: I think it really depends on the situation, but typically, it is important that they are sure the marriage is over before everything else. I think once we can grasp that and know they are ready to move forward, we advise them to make sure they have all of their financial documents in place. We recommend getting someone professionally to help you with finances and if there are kids involved, even if it’s very painful, to always make sure you put them first and make sure they are not involved.
To tie it all together, we always advise to never to do it alone. If you need emotional support, we will help you get a therapist. If you need financial advice, we will help you get a tax and financial analyst. It truly takes a team to get divorced, and we are here to be a part of that team and to help you build it.
Patch: How does DeTorres & DeGeorge Family Law stay ahead of new developments?
DeTorres: We work very hard day in and day out, and we have built a very solid team. I think it is that hard work and dedication allows us to continue to stay ahead with new developments.
We are very big in professional development and allowing ourselves to master every part of the business, especially areas outside of law that we might not be experts in. Attending workshops, conferences, seminars, summits and networking with influential people is how we constantly learn, grow and continue to move with new developments in business and society.
Patch: DeTorres & DeGeorge specializes in Flemington and Morristown. What is the draw to these areas?
DeTorres: We have been in Flemington/Hunterdon for over 23 years, and we have built a very strong foundation there, which has allowed us to expand out to the Morristown/northern New Jersey area. There is a lot of opportunity for our firm in Morristown and northern New Jersey, and we are hoping to build that same strong foundation in these areas as well for our firm.
Patch: What’s next for DeTorres & DeGeorge Family Law? How is the future of the firm envisioned?
DeTorres: We have just recently added in a practice area of estate planning. Rosanne will be heading that for now. We will be hosting workshops for people interested in learning more about estate planning. We will be hosting an "influencers" luncheon in late August for anyone who is interested in being a part of it. We are definitely focused on growth, and we are envisioning even more positive growth in the future.
