4th Ward Primary Debate Shines Light on Ice Rink Controversy, MacKay Park

Shirley Smith and Wayne Hamer are battling for the Democratic nomination for a seat on the city council.

A "neglected" city park and the uncertain future of a controversial ice rink are among the key focuses for two Democrats vying for a council seat in Englewood's highly diverse 4th Ward.

According to northjersey.com, incumbent Wayne Hamer battled back challenger and former school board member Shirley Smith in a debate last Thursday. No Republicans are in the running for nomination to the seat, essentially ensuring the victor of the Democratic primary on Tuesday a three-year term on the city council.

At the debate on Thursday, Smith said the police have not done nearly enough to combat crime at MacKay Park, according to the northjersey.com report. Hamer said the park isn't as dangerous as Smith claimed and suggested families "take back" the park with more activities, the news website reported.

Hamer reportedly said he had no objection to an ice rink but isn't opposed to other ideas either, telling the crowd he supports the construction of a recreation center in the city. Smith, according to the northjersey.com report, said she wanted the vacant Lincoln School to house a community center. She claimed the city has been derelict in providing needed services to the 4th Ward in recent years.
