Englewood, Hackensack Meridian Hospitals Announce Merger

ENGLEWOOD, NJ — Englewood Health and Hackensack Meridian Health will merge, the hospitals jointly announced Tuesday.

The merger will further cement Hackensack Meridian's footprint as the largest health care network in New Jersey. It currently has 17 hospitals from Bergen to Ocean counties and 500 patient care centers throughout New Jersey.

As part of the merger, Hackensack Meridian has committed $400 million to Englewood Health. The money will allow Englewood to focus more on various areas of treatment, including neuroscience, oncology, robotic surgery, and neonatal intensive care.

The merger will make Englewood Health an academic hub, and the hospital will benefit from Hackensack Meridian's already-existing partnerships with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Carrier Clinic, the state's largest behavioral health care provider.

Englewood Health employs about 3,400 people and has 1,100 affiliated physicians; no layoffs are planned, NorthJersey.com reported.

"As a health care system, we need to continuously evolve in order to provide our community with increased access to high-quality care and more specialties and services, close to home," said Warren Geller, Englewood Health's president and CEO. "Joining Hackensack Meridian Health will ensure our ability to deliver world-class care to the communities we serve in a border way, with greater resources and more cutting-edge technologies available to us."

The hospitals have been affiliated clinically and academically since 2015.

The New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, state Department of Health, and Federal Trade Commission will review the deal before it is finalized.
