Englewood Schools Could Get Less State Aid Next Year

Englewood schools could get less state aid under a plan to provide property tax cap relief.

ENGLEWOOD/ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, NJ — The Englewood School District could receive less state aid under a new plan from state lawmakers to provide property tax cap relief for districts that are facing cuts.

Englewood could get more than $9.1 million in state aid for the 2019-20 academic year, $488,000 or more than 5 percent less than last year, according to a plan from New Jersey Senate President Steve Sweeney.

Englewood Cliffs could receive $454,700, more than 9 percent, or $40,700 more than what the district received last year, according to the plan.

Nearly 200 districts could, potentially, see a decrease in the amount of aid they receive under Sweeney's plan.

Sweeney said this weekend he will introduce legislation to provide property tax cap relief for districts facing cuts due to a 2 percent tax increase cap championed by former Gov. Chris Christie.
