Englewood Students Learn Ethics From College Admissions Officer

A college admissions officer recently presented a pair of workshops aimed at teaching Englewood Information Systems and Pre-Engineering Academy students the importance of academic integrity and making ethical decisions.

The workshops, which were led by Assistant Director of High School Admissions for Berkeley College Katie Gensiner, took place Dec. 4 and were part of the Academies@Englewood "Expert Series" program.

Students were actively engaged in the presentations because they involved issues that directly affect them in their daily, academic lives, according to a school spokesperson.

In “The Business of You: Decisions and Consequences,” Gensiner helped students understand the consequences of their decisions when it comes to issues like virtual values, cyberbullying, work ethics, tech etiquette and cheating and plagiarism.

The second workshop, which Gensiner called “Academic Integrity,” outlined precisely what plagiarism is and emphasized the importance of following rules that are strictly enforced at most colleges and universities.

Gensiner discussed with students why they should avoid the temptation to use someone else’s work without credit and the potential consequences of plagiarizing the work of others, according to a spokesperson, calling it “a topic which every academic institution is dealing with in today’s learning environment.”

“It is great to see students learning about and participating in discussions that will impact their futures directly,” said Information Systems Academy program manager Anthony Dinallo, who organized the event.
