Four Englewood Graduates Awarded Dr. Greico Scholarships

Four recent graduates of Dwight Morrow High School and the Academies@Englewood are the recipients of cash awards from the Dr. John Grieco Scholarship Fund.

This year's recipients are Michael Abolafia (Columbia), Kathleen Baltazar (Ramapo College), Lillian Hikmah (St. Peter’s University) and Brian Kouassi (Boston College).

The Fund is a student-run organization that raises money for scholarships for Englewood public school students, grades 9-12.  It was created in memory of Dr. John Grieco, the highly respected superintendent of schools who was credited with "spearheading the renaissance of the Englewood School District."

The Fund is a part of an elective course that is offered to students interested in learning about how to operate a charitable organization.

A major sponsor of the Fund is the Community Chest of Englewood, Tenafly and Englewood Cliffs.  This year, for the second year in a row, the Chest provided a grant of $11,000, to be distributed to deserving students.

Awardees are selected through a competitive process for students from Dwight Morrow High School and the Academies @ Englewood.  Students are invited to submit a proposal to Judy Aronson, the Scholarship Fund's advisor.  All proposals were reviewed by a team of judges who made the final selections.

Each year a representative of the Community Chest is invited to attend the Annual Awards Ceremony to assist with presenting the awards.  This year's representative from the Community Chest was Michael Profita, Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Community Chest and Englewood-based attorney.  (pictured in the attached photo)
