GOP Leaders Plead Fifth to Questions of Alleged Mail-In Ballot Handling

Democrats Melanie Simon and Nora Seoane-Jobson are contesting the Nov. 5 election upset win of Englewood Council members Zhi "Philip" Liang and Nunzio Consalvo.

The legal battle over a disputed November Englewood Cliffs Borough Council election came to an impasse Tuesday, The Record reported.

About 100 voters were on hand to testify for the first day of a civil hearing in Bergen County Superior Court centered around alleged mail-in ballot irregularities in the Nov. 5 election upset win of GOP challengers Zhi “Philip” Liang and Nunzio Consalvo.  Democratic incumbents Melanie Simon and Nora Seoane-Jobson filed suit to challenge the result. Democrats now need at least 36 votes to flip the result of at least one of the Republican wins, the article said.

In Tuesday's testimony, Englewood Cliffs GOP Chair Carrol McMorrow, Republican Organization President Panagiota Rousouli and her husband, Charles Rousouli pleaded the fifth, refusing to testify in regard to  allegations that Panagiota Rousouli delivered 57 mail-in ballots to the Board of Elections.
