Hamer Claims Victory in Ward 4 Primary
Incumbent councilman defeated Shirley Smith in the Democratic primary Tuesday, plans to focus on youth recreation issues and Mackay Park in the months that follow.

Councilman Wayne Hamer fended off a challenge from candidate Shirley Smith Tuesday, all but ensuring his spot on the Englewood City Council in the November election.
Hamer captured 246 votes while Smith received 162 in the 4th Ward Democratic primary, according to unofficial results released by Englewood City Clerk Lauren Vande Vaarst. No Republican challenger has emerged for the November election, virtually guaranteeing Hamer a three-year term.
"I'm elated but there's a whole lot more work to do," Hamer said Tuesday night in a telephone interview. "I'm very excited for what's to come in the next few months."

The financial adviser – who previously served on the council from 1996 through 2003 – was first appointed to the council nine months ago following the death of Jack Drakeford, a powerful figure in the city for 50 years. Hamer then won re-election to serve out the remainder of Drakeford's term
He outlined two major focuses moving forward.

A "whole lot more sharing of information" is a priority, Hamer remarked, pointing to an upcoming youth forum scheduled for Saturday, June 15.
"One of the most important things we can do for our community is to wrap our arms around our young people and we're going to start doing that."
Issues concerning the conditions at Mackay Park were also hotly debated at a candidate's forum last week. Smith, a former school board member, said drug use, drinking and criminal mischief have resulted from the city's "neglect" of the 28-acre park.
Hamer vowed to ensure conditions improve.
"We're going to take care of it and make sure it gets used in a bigger and better way," he said Tuesday.Â
Smith, for her part, was gracious in defeat.
"I would like to wish Mr. Hamer well," she said, adding that she'll offer any help she can to Hamer to improve the lives of 4th Ward residents.
