Wright Arena's Free Ice Skating Extended Through New Year's Eve

If you haven't gone yet, make plans to see the reopened John T. Wright Arena. And bring your ice skates.

The free ice skating that accompanied the 'soft opening' of the John T. Wright Arena in Mackay Park was supposed to end Sunday.

Instead, the city has extended the free skating to Monday and Tuesday, according to a post on the Englewood Facebook page.

Skating will be open on Monday, Dec. 30 and Tuesday, Dec. 31, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Skate rental is $3.

After being closed since April, 2012 and enduring roof devastation in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, the repaired ice skating rink facility reopened to the public on Thursday. Councilman Eugene Skurnick, who attended the opening, said that a good time was had by all.

"There was a continuous stream of adults, children and teens coming to skate. The concession stand was open, the bathrooms were clean, and the public area was beautifully decorated. Everyone was having a great time," Skurnick posted on Patch.

A grand opening for the ice skating rink is planned, but no firm date's been set.
