2 Year Old Florida Girl Needs Rare Blood Donors to Survive

To donate blood or for information on how to organize a blood drive Please call Toll Free: 1-800-933-2566 Visit: www.nybloodcenter.org

New Jersey Blood Services (NJBS) is assisting in an international search to find blood donors who match a 2 year-old Florida girl recently diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive form of cancer found in younger patients. Her treatment will rely on multiple blood transfusions. What complicates this situation is that Zainab Mughal has one of the rarest blood types, Indian B which means that her blood is missing a common antigen. Less than 4% of the population is a blood type match for Zainab creating an urgent need to find compatible donors. Compatible donors are of Indian, Pakistani or Iranian descent Potential donors of those nationalities should immediately reach out to New York Blood Center and schedule an appointment to donate to see if you are a match. Individuals affiliated with an organization that can sponsor a blood drive should please contact Marie Forrestal at mforrestal@nybc.org or 732-616-0798. Together we can all help to find those rare donors that will allow Zainab to continue her fight to survive.

Blood donors must be between the ages of 16 (with signed parental consent) and 75 (or older with a doctor’s written permission), weigh a minimum of 110 pounds and be in generally good health. All donors will benefit from a free mini exam including a review of their pulse rate, blood pressure, and temperature. Donors will need a photo or signature ID. Donors who are not sure if they are eligible to donate can call 1-800-688-0900.
