Bergen County Opens Storm Shelter in Hackensack

FDU's Rothman Center is being used as a shelter, as of 6 p.m. Sunday

Bergen County officials have opened a shelter at ’s Rothman Center in Hackensack, a county official said Sunday.

The shelter has heat, meals and cots available for residents impacted by the weekend winter storm, said Jeanne Baratta, chief of staff at the Bergen County Executive’s Office.  

FDU was relocating students living in dorms to the shelter, University spokeswoman Dina Schipper said.

"Without lighting and heating in the residence halls, this is the safe and prudent action to take.  Power is out across a wide area of Bergen County and we have no way of knowing when power will be restored to the Teaneck side of campus. Hackensack side of campus has power," Schipper said in a statement. 

Officials said they couldn’t accept pets at the shelter, which opened at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The shelter is located at 100 University Plaza Drive in Hackensack, off Temple Avenue from Hackensack Avenue.
