Feuding With the Dead

Senator McCain as we choose to remember him

On March 21,2019, former Senator Joseph Lieberman wrote a piece for the Washington Post on a proper response to the President’s attacks on the late Senator John McCain. The op-ed was written by a friend, as a defense/tribute to the late Senator. Senator Lieberman wrote as a friend, colleague, and informed citizen. In the article, several aspects of the life of Senator McCain were emphasized. What legacy did this man leave us?
1. Senator McCain was a forgiving man. He spent years in a brutal Vietnam prison but later, as Senator, fought for normalized relations with her. This was the sign of greatness.

2. Senator McCain looked forward. Even after feuding with colleagues (which he did do) he forgot his annoyance and learned to form coalitions with them, when it was feasible. He was a builder.

3. Senator McCain was solution-oriented. He disliked the Republican idea of scrapping Obamacare without having a proper alternative. “What have we to lose by trying to work together to find …solutions.”
Senator McCain possessed many positive traits. As a mediator, I hope my clients can show the ability to rise above the challenges life has sent their way. Forgiveness, forward-looking posture, and inclusiveness make for a can-do personality. We can all use more of these skills.
