Former Saddle Brook PD Lt. Bernie Ahrens III Dies
Ahrens died Wednesday after a long struggle with diabetes, police said.

SADDLE BROOK, NJ — Former Saddle Brook police Lt. Bernard H. Ahrens III died Wednesday, the police department announced.
Ahrens died after a "long and valiant struggle with diabetes," police said on Facebook.
Ahrens joined the department in 1980. He was promoted to sergeant in 1988 and to lieutenant in 1995. He retired in 2008. He was also licensed private investigator.

Ahrens enjoyed motorcycles. He was a member of the New Jersey Blue Knights Motorcycle Club and enjoyed painting and customizing motorcycles at DJ Custom Sign Co. in Garfield, police said.
He is survived by his wife, Tammy; son Bernard; soon-to-be daughter-in-law Andrea; step children Stacey, Tammy, and Thomas; sister Jody; nieces, Tarryn, Amber, and Stephanie; nephew Evan; many cousins; and dear friends.

Visitation is at Kugler Community Home for Funerals, 311 Fifth St., Saddle Brook from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday. A funeral service is at the funeral home Saturday at 11 a.m. Cremation will follow the service.
