RUTHERFORD, NJ – The much-hyped Popeyes chicken sandwich is back and causing traffic chaos in and around the chain's Rutherford restaurant.

After the sandwich sold out nationwide over the summer, it returned recently returned to Popeyes restaurants, sparking long lines across the country.

At the Rutherford restaurant, which is located on Meadow Road by Route 17, the tie-ups has gotten so bad police have posted an electronic sign out front that reads: “A sandwich isn’t worth a ticket. Do not delay traffic,” News 12 reported.

Popeyes shares an entrance with a nearby Starbucks and when both drive-thrus get busy, the line of cars can back up onto Meadow Road and then onto Route 17. And, when the chain sells out of the sandwich, drivers have attempted to back out of the drive-thru, NorthJersey.com reported.

Rutherford Police Chief John Russo told News 12 police have observed motorists “waiting an extraordinary amount of time on both drive-thrus to get a sandwich or coffee without consideration for those vehicles not trying to get into the establishments.”

If it looks busy, Russo recommended people park their cars and actually go inside the Popeyes for their sandwich.

Since the sandwich returned, there have been traffic jams at many of the chain's locations and incidents of violence. One of the most shocking incidents, however, happened at a Popeyes in Maryland where a man was fatally stabbed after a fight broke out.
