School Bus Drags Pedestrian 70 Feet in Fatal Accident

A Fort Lee woman was killed after she was dragged more than 70 feet by a school bus Thursday morning in Leonia.

Leyla Kan, 60, was walking westbound on Fort Lee Road and crossing Broad Avenue when she was struck shortly before 8:30 a.m. Thursday, according to NJ.com. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The bus driver, Esperanza Jaramillo, 43, of Tenafly, received a summons for failure to yield to a pedestrian, careless driving and operating a vehicle with improper equipment, according to NJ.com.

Jaramillo didn’t realize she had struck the pedestrian and dragged the woman 71 feet before witnesses got the bus to stop, the report said.

A teenager and his aide were the only passengers on the bus and were not injured, the report said.
