Bergen Highway Is NJ's Deadliest
A new report found NJ's deadliest roads — something you should know before the Labor Day weekend — and Bergen County has the worst one.
FORT LEE, NJ — A major Bergen County highway has been named one of New Jersey's deadliest a few days before one of the most heavily-traveled days of the year, Labor Day.
The people at ASecureLife, an online platform that provides reviews of home security systems, chose to look back at a subject that generally flies under the radar — the risks of summer driving.
Interstate 95 is New Jersey's deadliest highway. Twenty-seven fatalities occurred there from May through September in 2015, 2016, and 2017, which is the time frame ASecureLife examined.

The two other of New Jersey highways are interstates 78 and 80, which had 18 and 17 fatalities on them, respectively, during that same time frame.
ASecureLife used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System.

To give some perspective on how the summer fatality numbers in the United States compare to the dangers of winter driving — the Federal Highway Administration found that on average the combination of snow, sleet, icy pavement, and slushy pavement accounted for 1,705 deaths a year on U.S. roads between 2007-2016. In comparison, ASecureLife found that 1,768 deaths occurred on average annually between May and September in the three years from 2015 through 2017.
